“I attempt to give a new voice to the iconic animals of the south. I gain inspiration from the uniqueness that makes this land my home.”
When did you realize that art would be your profession? I think I’ve known or at least been drawn to the arts from a very early age. Whether it’s been music or the visual arts, I’ve always been driven to create. It wasn’t until about four years ago, that I was fortunate enough to start painting full time.
Were there many obstacles along the way? I’ve been really blessed to have had lots of different adventures in my life that have lead me to where I am today. I can’t call them obstacles – but maybe learning experiences that life has sent my way. I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing today without them.
What do you feel has been your greatest achievement as an artist? I’m not sure that’s a question for me to answer. A famous artist (Picasso I think?) once said something along the lines of this – I’m a painter, it’s up to the people to decide if I’m an artist. So if I had to answer, I would just say – it’s that I’m so very fortunate to do this every day.
How important are “the arts” in our schools? They are everything. As Mississippians, it’s what we do and who we are.
“The MAEC is the beacon for the arts in Mississippi. They are not only showcasing artists who have made this state what it is, but are educating the public and fostering the next era in Mississippi Arts.”
